It’s Fall, y’all! There’s finally a chill in the air and the leaves are showing their true colors. Apple cider is readily available, the kiddos are dressed up in their cutest costumes, the grownups are dressed in their geekiest gear, and there’s candy EVERYWHERE. I absolutely adore this time of year. Fall is my favorite season. In no small part because right about now, my witch obsession is not considered weird. Since the witching season is finally upon us, here’s a list of 5 of the best witching families to revisit this time of year.
1. The Halliwell Sisters (Charmed, Original Series)
Yes, there’s a new version of Charmed out now. But the original is still Bae. While any time is great to check in with these wonderful witches, Fall is a particularly good time to go back and remember why we loved these ladies so much in the first place.
2. The Waverley Sisters (Garden Spells & First Frost, by Sarah Addison Allen)
Garden Spells is a great book that can be enjoyed year-round. However, it is also a book that feels like Fall. The pages seem almost like magic themselves as they conjure the feeling of chilly evenings, cozy times by the fire, and the smell of your favorite warm, Autumn beverage. This book is made for Fall. Now is the perfect season to check it out for the first time or pick it up to enjoy the wonder all over again.
3. The Owens Sisters (Practical Magic)
The Owens sisters are the perfect pair to enjoy during a creepy and romantic October evening. These girls bring the perfect blend of spooky and sexy. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy their story all over again. It’s just as enjoyable now as it was the first time you saw it. You’ll still laugh and cry and gasp and sigh as you feel all the feels of the season with these lovely ladies.
4. The Merriwick Women (Good Witch)
Sometimes, magic is spooky, creepy, dangerous, and overtly powerful. Other times, it’s exactly the opposite. The Merriwick women wield a magic that is gentle, subtle, wholesome, and sweet. There is nothing spooky about them or their gifts. While everyone else is casting spells and mixing potions, these ladies are simply living their lives and helping their friends and neighbors in whatever way they can. Sometimes, no one can be sure they’ve done anything at all. But it’s still so much fun to watch.
5. The Sanderson Sisters (Hocus Pocus)
The Sanderson sisters are a ridiculous trio up to no good. Fortunately for everyone, they’re quite incompetent. So more than anything, their schemes are just entertaining and funny. These ladies mean to do harm to good people, but the odds that they’ll manage to pull it off are pretty slim. So watching them try is always a good time. This film has become a Halloween classic and deserves at least one re-watch each year.
No, I didn’t forget Harry Potter and all the witches and wizards of Hogwarts. However, it seems silly to relegate that group to any single season when the world has seen fit to embrace them all year long. Likewise, the ladies of MacBeth are excellent to revisit whenever you may get the notion. Also, I considered the heinous witches of American Horror Story: Coven, but since I’ve not watched that show, I can’t add them to my list. Have you experienced them? Would they be on your list? Who else have I forgotten? Let me know in the comments.
Also, the classic film Bell, Book and Candle with Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart. A great movie.

Right you are! That one is an absolute classic! They even made a TV show of it at some point, though I don’t think it lasted very long.

The Craft is excellent! It’s a fave of mine. SO 90’s!!! There were talking a couple of years ago to turn that into a TV show as well. I’m glad it didn’t pan out. I love those characters just as they are… Dripping with 90’s goth and angst.

Right? I think there are just some films that should stay as is. None of this re-make or re-boot stuff. It ruins the authenticity, well it does for me anyway.

I completely agree! Too many reboots and remakes. They rarely stand up to the original and often they tarnish the legacy.

Absolutely! And some films that were dramas are remade into comedies and they are just trash. I completely agree with you, the legacy of the film needs to remain untouched.

I know there are many movies with sister/witches but somehow Practical Magic is my fav. Especially since Aiden Quinn plays a great character.
