The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a book written by Mitch Albom. It tells the story of the life and death of a fictional music icon named Frankie Presto. It is the most beautiful love letter to music I’ve ever read. And I cannot recommend it enough.

Frankie Presto is born in a small village in Spain in 1939 during the turbulent rule of Francisco Franco Bahamonde. The story of Frankie’s life is an eventful one that spans five decades, four countries, three continents, and one epic love affair. Frankie is born a poor boy and becomes one of the most famous musicians of the 1950’s and 60’s. His life takes many twists and turns and includes cameos from musical legends like Duke Ellington, Hank Williams, The Beatles, Kiss, and more.

The story of Frankie’s life is told at his funeral by Music, the intangible talent that Frankie was blessed with at birth. Music considers Frankie one of its children. It tells the story of his tragedies and triumphs through a veil of love, sympathy, and honesty.

Frankie’s story is a narrative, the complete telling of a life from birth to death. However, it is also a love letter to music, expressing the depth and devotion that the musically-inclined feel toward their art. It tries to explain how those with music in their souls are drawn to music, how it is a part of them, and why it is so hard for them to ever be very far from it. The story celebrates music as an art form, a skill, a passion, and an obsession. It celebrates musical styles from classical to blues to country to rock. It celebrates the history of music and great musicians that defined the last century. It celebrates the magic that is music and the incredible impact a musical life can make.

It’s clear in the words of this book that its author, Mitch Albom, is himself a disciple and devotee of music. His language conveys a love of music that is beautiful and contagious. The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, like all Mitch Albom books, is well-written and easy to read. It includes a wonderfully entertaining narrative and language that longs to be quoted.

I have read this book twice and own it in both print and audio. I expect this will be a tale I return to at least once a year because of its sheer beauty and the beautiful way it touches my heart. I recommend this book for everyone, whether they are music lovers or not. I recommend this book to every person who reads books, whether they normally enjoy non-genre literature or not. I recommend this book with my highest praise to anyone who will listen because the beauty, history, devotion, and love that are part of this tale should be part of each and every one of us.
